Sony has officially announced the launch of its new flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 VIII. Judging by the teaser released, the company is preparing not only an upgrade to the technical specifications but also a significant redesign of the device's appearance—the first in several generations of the lineup.

The launch will take place on May 13. There are no official details about the smartphone yet, but numerous leaks have already appeared online. The main change will be a new camera module: instead of the familiar vertical module, Sony is using a square “island” with three lenses. Because of this, the device's body will become slightly wider and thicker.

According to insiders, the Xperia 1 VIII will retain Sony's signature approach to the display. The smartphone will feature a 6.5-inch flat OLED panel without notches or cutouts for the front-facing camera, while symmetrical bezels at the top and bottom will remain, concealing the front-facing stereo speakers. As expected, the 3.5mm headphone jack will remain.

The main camera module is expected to have a 24mm equivalent focal length, the ultra-wide-angle module 16mm, and the telephoto module 70mm. At the same time, judging by the leaks, Sony will abandon the 85–170 mm variable zoom in favor of a fixed telephoto lens with a higher-resolution sensor.
