Samsung has revealed details of its new Flex Titanium technology for creating flexible displays. The new displays will appear in the next generation of its clamshell phones and will be significantly different from existing solutions.

During development, Samsung focused on increasing display strength and reducing creases at the fold. Engineers had to strike a balance between flexibility, thickness, and strength, which was assisted by a new two-component substrate design.

Beneath the OLED panel is a precision-rolled titanium film approximately 1/3 the thickness of a human hair. According to the vendor, it is 20 times stiffer than conventional polymer films, increasing the strength of the display module without significantly increasing its size.

A titanium plate located beneath the sensor serves as a supporting structure when the device is fully unfolded. It is bonded to the module without air gaps and maintains the flexibility necessary for repeated folding cycles.

Additionally, the displays use next-generation organic materials, which maintain high resolution while improving overall energy efficiency. Further details about the new displays will be revealed at the Galaxy Unpacked presentation on July 22.
