Google unveiled the Pixel 8a, a $499 smartphone with a flagship chip and 120Hz screen

Google has announced a mid-budget smartphone Pixel 8a with an improved 120Hz display, a new Tensor G3 chip like the flagship Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, and support for software updates for 7 years. At the same time, the manufacturer has kept the price at $499 like the previous Pixel 7a model.

Despite today's high-profile announcement of new products from Apple, Google also did not stay away and presented an updated model of the budget smartphone Pixel 8a, which received a number of significant improvements over its predecessor.

In particular, the Pixel 8a now features a display with a 120Hz refresh rate, which was previously only available on Google's flagship models. The 6.1-inch screen has been given a high resolution of 2400 × 1080 pixels. And support for the operating system is promised for 7 years ahead - the smartphone will receive updates until 2031, that is, from Android 14 to Android 21.

Another major improvement is the installation of Google's new Tensor G3 processor, which again was previously only used on the flagship Pixel 8.

This is the latest generation chip with improved performance and energy efficiency. The rest of the specs are pretty much the same as last year's Pixel 7a. This is 8 GB of RAM, 128 GB of internal memory, IP67 water and dust protection, in-screen fingerprint scanner and other features. The camera set also remains the same - a 64MP main module (f/1.89) and a 13MP wide-angle sensor (f/2.2).The front camera is also 13MP (f/2.2).

As for the design, the Pixel 8a has become more rounded and less square compared to the Pixel 7a. With its shape, the novelty resembles the Apple iPhone 7. Available in black, white, green and blue colors. Pixel 8a received a 4492 mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging.

Pixel 8a pre-orders are already open and sales will start on May 14. It is noted that Google is not yet planning to lower the price of last year's Pixel 7a model, so you will have to choose between these two versions in the same price segment.
